Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was an exceptional leader because of his nonviolent approach to bringing justice. King used his freedom of speech in an effective way to persuade followers into sharing the same beliefs. Martin Luther King, Jr. was known for his eloquent and powerful speeches and writing. He was a strong leader, who made a positive change in the Civil Rights Movement. To the contrary, there were others in the Civil Rights Movement who used violence, trying to make their voice heard. However, this was not successful, because as a result many people were hurt or killed. Today, people still continue to use violent measures and negative speech in an attempt to get what they want, but this approach remains unsuccessful. Assignment Due Tuesday, January 27th: Read the following attached documents: 1. An excerpt from Martin Luther King, Jr.'s letter from jail in 1963. 2. An article regarding today's current event: Charles Hebdo and the danger they face with freedom of speech. Answer the following question using the ACES model: After reading the two documents, what is the difference between Martin Luther King, Jr.'s approach versus the magazine, Charlie Hebdo's way of using freedom of speech? Which do you think is a more powerful way of using freedom of speech and why? (Think about the results of MLK versus Charlie Hebdo)
